This requires a ball to be at the disposal of the trailing team. If the leading team controls all the balls they must make a legitimate effort to get at least one ball across the attack line and into the opponent's backcourt. If this is not done within 5 seconds, a violation will be called. A team may avoid a 5 second violation by throwing or rolling a ball into the opponent's backcourt.

Teams are responsible for providing their own retrievers, and the number of retrievers is usually determined by the tournament director. If any part of the player's body touches the end lines or far neutral zone line, the player is "out".

If momentum carries a player out of bounds while making a catch, the player is not out as long as he had control of the ball before going out of bounds. A player shall not leave the playing field to avoid being hit or in an attempt to catch a ball.
