So we turned to several local running groups and experts to get a lowdown on where we should be jogging next. We run it as a group on the last Wednesday of every month.
Since the bridge is one giant incline, it may not be best for beginner runners but can be great for runners who want to do hill repeats and tougher workouts. For the short repeats, run up and turn left, past the gazebo with great views of the Schuylkill River and Boathouse Row!
Next, run up and turn right until you reach the sign for Lemon Hill Mansion a neoclassical summer villa c. A good workout is to continue alternating left and right for a total of five each, giving slightly under 3 miles of hills. Instead of turning left onto the dirt path, you may instead continue straight on Sedgley Drive for about yards. At the 3-way road split, the full loop proceeds either sharp left onto Lemon Hill Drive which is unmarked to run the loop clockwise or to proceed to the short repeat course, or slight left to run it counterclockwise.
In addition to the sights listed above, you will see a statue of the first Fairmount Park Commissioner. Alternate directions each loop. Four loops gives 3 miles of hills. When finished, be sure to cross Kelly Drive only at a traffic light. This course is not lit, so be especially careful when it is dark outside. Auto traffic is usually minimal, but events on Boathouse Row can clog up the roads. In front of the world famous Philadelphia Museum of Art is arguably the more renowned concrete Rocky Steps, among the most famous steps in the world.
While you may see hundreds or even thousands of tourists every day running and walking up the steps once, repeats are great for interval training. From the bottom to the main promenade are six sections of steps, totaling 72 steps this doesn't include the additional steps right by the front doors. A good workout is to run them up, one at a time, then walk back as a recovery, and repeat as many times as you want. You can also run up the concrete hills on each side of the steps. Be mindful of the many pedestrians here, as well as the occasional video crew and wedding party.

The most popular route for marathon training is undoubtedly the Joseph Plumb Martin Trail, which contains a hilly, paved 5-mile loop around the park. Though difficult, this loop is worth the sweeping scenic views of the meadows where Revolutionary soldiers once camped. Be sure to check out a map and plan your route before heading out. The Pennypack Trail, located in Northeast Philadelphia, is a 9-mile paved bike path that runs the entire length of the park and Pennypack Creek. This shaded path offers a quiet and peaceful escape from city streets for a long run on a hot day.
The park is perfect for any type of race training, as the bike path is hilly in some areas and flat in others. Trail lovers can pop into many side trails, which wind into the secluded woods to form long loops. Park at the parking lot off of Pine Road, across from Fox Chase Farm for best availability and trail access.
Park at any of these access points listed here and head in either direction for a nice, long out-and-back run.
